Oh what a time we live in. I awoke at 0400 hours this morning with the odd craving to watch Voltron. So I fired up Netflix, and began an episode. The show wasn’t doing “it” for me, that is UNTIL they formed Voltron. The Nostalgia Feels were ON as soon as the “Activate Interlocks! Dyna-Therms connected. Infra-Cells up; Mega-Thrusters are go!”.
It was then when I realized that it wasn’t the show that I remembered fondly, it was a few key moments of the show. When I tried to view the program as a whole, I was bored, and at times annoyed. Modern shows have spoiled me with great storytelling.
The show’s original template, Beast King Go-Lion, never interested me unlike Choujikuu Yousai Macross. Man, I loved that series.
While I will keep watching these oldies, of which there are some which have great stories such as a few series by Filmation, or the Robotech Saga, the shows that just have that one moment will just be background noise until that certain time arrives. So, it’s not the old shows, themselves, that I remember fondly as much as the essence for that moment in time, that brings back great memories of fun instances of my youth. Old cartoons, and TV shows, are still worth it for that brief set of scenes, if nothing else 🙂
